I think it's because it was the first major movie will ferrell did after leaving snl and at the time he was pretty popular

personally, i think because it's one of the few christmas movies that are truly funny without verging into the gross/vulgar territory. christmas movies are often categorized into romance - sentimental - children. so its a bit slapstick, a bit absurd, a bit sentimental, with the connection of christmas being 'real'.
