Every generation deserves a megastar boyband and I don’t think there has been one to have the success of One Direction in over 14 years.

There's currently a nugu Kpop boyband on Britain Gots Talent, I'm surprised he hasn't taken them under his wigs yet. They already have a decent following and putting them on BGT was a smart PR move.

Simon’s always been a bit weird with acknowledging BTS and any non-white British talent in general. Britain’s Got Talent has a chronic problem of making every single black musician sing gospel *at least* once so I wouldn’t be surprised if his next shtick is making every Asian talent play some kind of stereotypically kpop role/behaviour at some point.

I checked and one of them grew up in LA. I guess they chose BGT because it's the most popular version of that franchise?

1Ds success was such an obvious accident that somehow “worked” at the time mostly because of luck and timing. No one in the Syco world actually planned out how that went, that just blew up and they didn’t even know how to manage it.

i also think it really helped 1d that the western market did not have a major boy group in a long time. like yeah we had the jonas brothers but even they were kinda struggling keeping attention after a couple of years cause they were marketed as more of an instrumental serious group than a fun/cute boy group. now the k-pop world is increasingly connected to the western market so there's a lot more consistent competition

Timing was the biggest part of it. The Jonas brothers were big for a minute but were already “off” at that point and had been replaced by Bieber and then Bieber was planning a “break”. Simon/Syco were definitely going after that market knowing they were off at the time/going to be off but they definitely didn’t really plan for it to blow up the way it did (and were completely unprepared when it happened). Other than “Bieber’s going on break” I don’t think Syco really had a plan at all.

1D also didn’t actually last that long as a group they just worked nonstop for 4-5 years so it felt like they were around forever bc they put out an album every year and toured 9-10 months of each year.

BTS already took 1D's place

it's ridiculous thinking taking a bunch of untrained boys (more than half who lbr can't actually sing) who will just end up throwing stuff at each other on stage is ever going to fare well against a heavily trained and tailored k-pop group. the standard for groups is significantly higher now. if he really wants another big group he's going to have to put significantly more effort into it and probably actually make the group do choreo at the least
