I hate to say this. I didn't wanna have to say this. But it was really underwhelming :(

I'd be more hopeful if there was a season 2 but... there isn't

It was incredibly underwhelming. The finale, I mean. I liked all the episodes and the show as a whole.

Tbh that’s pretty much how the book ends too. [Spoiler (click to open)]I get why people wanted a big battle but ultimately that’s not really the point of the story. The real battle was one of wits and trickery.

It reminded me a bit of Breaking Dawn in the sense that the battle that is shown (or in this case teased) hasn't really happened at that point in the story.

I'm not sure I myself wanted a big battle, but at least something big happened that would provide a better ending point. Toranaga's reveal was not news to me at all. At least some kind of confrontation between him and Blackthorne, or a peek into the future as we see the complete aftermath of the whole thing.

This was such a perfect series. Sobbed so much during the scenes between Fuji and Anjin; I’m grateful at least that Fuji got to choose something for herself in the end and maybe got some peace.

The amount of heart that was poured into this show is staggering and I hope the cast and crew are recognised for their work during awards season!

show of the year for me so far, no question

i actually like that the finale resisted going for a big sekigahara battle episode and stuck with something quieter instead. the toranaga reveal was great. all the fuji and blackthorne scenes were the other standouts for me, especially seeing fuji find some peace.

i really hope anna sawai and hiroyuki sanada pick up emmy noms at the least, even though the limited series categories are a bloodbath this year (and i also hope they stick to their guns about only having 1 season, because it ended well, i'm honestly not as interested in a full season without my girl mariko, and i can't think of a single limited series that was improved by forcing a 2nd season)

While watching I was in a "is this it?" mindset because it wasn't what I was expecting but in the end the finale really pulled off what it's been showing us the whole time! Toranaga doesn't succeed with a straight forward battle, it's about knowing and defying expectations and the quiet strategies coming together.
It didn't answer every thread it started but the poem made me really feel like sometimes you're supposed to find beauty in the text without everything being spelled out. I might be giving it too much credit, it just really worked for me in that way.

Edit Oops didn't mean this as a reply but here we are.

I loved the finale. It gave me what I needed for the characters which is what my concern was.

Also finding out Blackthorne didn't end up being the key to anything and Toranaga kept him around because he was his white boy of the month had me cacklinggg.
