Courtney Love says Taylor Swift is not important or interesting as an artist in new interview with The Standard:

“Taylor is not important. She might be a safe space for girls, and she’s probably the Madonna of now, but she’s not interesting as an artist.” pic.twitter.com/x7EhVgjFUh

Today I found out I’m Courtney Love.

(Except! I’m usually not interested in Beyoncé and I greatly dislike country music, yet I can’t stop playing this album)

- "but she is not interesting as an artist" is 100% the correct read on swift
- the statement on beyonce seems superficially innocuous but i don't trust or care about anything courtney has to say about black artistry
- the madonna feud will never not be funny
- i absolutely get why courtney would say that about pj's first 4 albums (dry/rid of me/to bring you my love/is this desire is a phenomenal run), but i suspect it's because pj sonically went where courtney couldn't follow. courtney can do what she does well, but she's never been one to experiment or stretch the boundaries of her work

Please it has nothing to do with sonically not being able to follow someone. Courtney has a vast appreciation for female musicians from all walks of genres. PJ started taking herself way too seriously after the first 4 albums. I myself quit after White Chalk. It was just getting too cerebral without any payoff imo. Demolition 6 in particular read like a bad art rock parody.

What bothers me abt PJ is that *none of her work is truly autobiographical, it’s just vague, but anyways…

Is it possible Courtney meant Dry, Rid of Me, *4-Track Demos, and To Bring You My Love? Just that Is This Desire? differs from all of those sonically and thematically.

What's interesting to me is how Taylor's career trajectory is actually really similar to Olivia Newton-John's. Start out with country, dabble in folk/soft rock then skyrocketing as a polished popstar. The only thing missing is a bona fide film classic like Grease. Personality wise though, she's more like Carly Simon 2.0
