I think this is one of the best aged teen movies from the '80s and is actually a really clever satire. It's also more enjoyable to watch as an adult

I'll be honest and say I don't get the satire. I've read that its a critique of capitalism but it just shows a teenager beating capitalism at its own game and having the time of his life.

I wouldn't say he's having the time of his life for all of it, he's terrified of Lana's pimp and of her friends trashing the house most of the time, lol. It's just funny he's desperate to get into an Ivy League university so he can go into a career to make him rich, but the prostitute [i.e. the lowest end of the economy chain] turns out to be a genius with money

Hmm didn't totally see it like that cause I only saw the critique of capitalism but I see your point!!

"but the prostitute [i.e. the lowest end of the economy chain] turns out to be a genius with money"

Plus isn't the implication that Lana was in cohorts with Guido the pimp because when she and Joel have sex on the train, that's ironically the same night his house gets robbed and then when Joel tries to contact her only he answers. I don't remember it all but she was clearly in on it and wasn't too remorseful about iirc.

for as iconic as it is, I've never seen this movie actually. I'm Gen X too so I feel like I should have

Same sort of. I'm gen x and only saw it like last year I think. I was too young when It came out and once I was old enough I didn't really care

The score is fantastic!!

Although you can see that the ending def was meddled by the studio cause it kinda neatly wraps up the story.
