Olivia Rodrigo joined Gwen/No Doubt for a performance of Bathwater at Coachella 2024. It's been really cute to see Olivia embraced by the older generation of female rock artists like Gwen, Alanis, etc. The song's verses were def a key or two too low for her to sing comfortably though, because Gwen had the much stronger voice in the verses. I went down the rabbit hole last night watching late 80s/early 90s ND videos and wow Gwen’s stage presence was really something, she totally commanded crowds. Also learned about the original lead singer John Spence, had no idea.

Going through their spotify right now and I had no idea how small their discovery was. It's crazy I though they had way more music than they do.

So. Music friends of ontd who are actually trained. If you’re able to go that low, but also relatively high but not as high as most sopranos can get, WTF is that? I’m possibly a mezzo-soprano but I get confused when I’m able to sing along with a male baritone and still hit the notes.

(I love music and singing but am absolutely 0% trained)

Well, you've got your natural, comfortable range and your extended range. I would personally call Gwen an alto with a bit of an extended range (ngl mostly because she puts unhealthy pressure on her vocal cords). You're probably a mezzo who has an extended range you can bust out when necessary... if you want to keep your voice healthy it might be worth it to do some music lessons to learn how to sing in a safe way so you don't get nodules or other vocal cord strain when you extend your range.

just an extended range. in high school, i could go from contralto to mezzo soprano if i reallllllllly fucking worked at it. these days i'm basically a baritone lol. you have to just be careful with it and work with it
