I was just telling my coworker about the acting between toranaga and hiromatsu and how absolutely INCREDIBLE they both were and the subtly in the silences and looks and the freaking tension. Truly a master class in the craft I stg
Hiroyuki Sanada with that masterclass of "I cannot openly weep because you're defying me but GODDAMN YOU STUPID LOYAL FUCKING FRIEND. YOU'RE FORCING MY HAND HERE AND I KNOW YOU'RE DOING THE RIGHT THING BUT I WANT TO PUNCH A WALL" face.
Ugh, these two.
And then Omi at the side in that scene be a reflection of me.
they were both in on it tho. it was more like, they were mourning and saying goodbye while pretending to be angry.
edit: i read what the co-creater had to say about it and idk. the end of the episode when toranaga said that hiromatsu had his role to play in pretending toranaga is defeated indicated theyre pretending to be defeated. maybe the OG toranaga plan was for his generals to commit seppuku and not hiro.
I know he's integral to the story but I just love it when I don't see Blackburn on the screen because IDGAF about that man. MVPS this week are Horoyuki Sanada, Shinnosuke Abe and Tokuma Nishioka. The whole cast/casting director deserves recognition. Also, I'm reading one of the co-creators' explanations for Hiromatsu's court scene and...I don't like it.
i dont see how it makes sense given the last toranaga scene with mariko when he tells her hiro had his role to play. it sounded like they were in on it; but reading this i wonder if toranaga had another plan (his generals commit seppuku for example, not hiro)
I really want to watch this. It's right up my alley, but I'm nervous about it being a well done show. I feel like the ball gets dropped on shows like this a lot. So break it to me ONTD...should I watch it? Or hell, I'll probably watch it anyway, but prepare me for if I should go in expecting a good show or cheesy.
uhm yes, you should 100% Like there are only 2 episodes left and it's just getting better. It's not cheesy at all and is really emotionally intelligent show. The production value and acting are some of the best I've seen.
It’s so fucking good you should absolutely watch it. It’s also stunningly shot. It’s just gorgeous. Big shoutout to the women in this show too. I cannot say enough good things.
My life has honestly become just passing time until Tuesday for the next episode. It's incredible. Even something as "simple" as the majority of dialogue actually being in Japanese is amazing to me. Also, watching the behind the scenes, Hiroyuki Sanada and the other cast were talking about the importance he places on attention to detail / accuracy and how it was such a huge thing for him that, instead of not being able to give much input or criticisms before in other productions, that he was able to do on this project because he's main actor, but also producing and directing, plus all the other actors speaking about how honored / excited they are to be working with him. The cast is so committed and it shines through.
My friends and I are watching it in 1-2 episode chunks every couple weeksish, and man is it rough to not watch ahead! We'll only be on ep 7 when we stop on Thursday!
Still kind of astounded at how different Cosmo Jarvis looks IRL as opposed to Blackthorne. Was there a narrative reason Blackthorne had to have blue eyes?
Also who out here making Toranaga icons, hit a girl up.

I was wondering about this too. Maybe it was to emphasize how alien he must've looked to the Japanese people? There was that scene where Mariko's son asks if the Anjin's eyes are really the color of a storm or whatever.
I was really bothered by the contacts at first because light-colored contacts ALWAYS look fake on people with dark eyes and it was distracting. I don't notice it as much anymore but I do wish they had just changed his eye color in post (or cast an actor with blue eyes) if it was so important.
I actually felt sad for Buntaro, but wow what a tense episode!!! Also, I laughed when Blackthorne went to see his crew and was like ohhhh they stink……. So glad to see his character development over basic hygiene!

Link to that? I'm curious now.

Here you go. I just don't really buy that Hiromatsu wouldn't know considering that line he gives that Toranaga intends to fight...
