Re: the last two statements, why would she lie? The costumer in particular may have supplied the pieces and that doesn’t mean the story isn’t true if producers/a director wouldn’t “let” her wear them.

Exactly, just because an actor and the costume designer were not aware doesn't mean this didn't happen. In fact, it's more likely it was discussed privately because it's a gross thing to ask of an actor.
