They've always struggled with the characters too. They picked obvious favorites to strip of their nastier actions (Tyrion), and at the end of the day, I don't think I like what they did with any of them beyond some more minor characters like Jorah. Theon is my favorite character so "fixing" his lifelong identity crisis by having Jon of all people tell him he's a "Greyjoy and a Stark" and belittling his prisoner status in Winterfell has made me seethe for years. The only reason that character worked at all through the show's Stark goggles was because Alfie Allen was a good enough actor to pull it off.
