tbh the whole thing was really weird and I remember the hate being pretty vitriolic even on here lol it was just odd because ultimately her biggest sin was... being a little bit cringe. idk I think people have this thing where they want celebrities (especially female oens) to do well, but do not want them to seem like they want to do well, or like they're thirsty for success at all and I think that's pretty unfair.

I only lurked here off/on during that period but I distinctly remember her getting OTT hate for no reason other than her being a theater kid.

People even got mad about her correcting folks on her name.

I had to stay away from ONTD during that period because I liked her and people were so mean about it. (Also the transphobia and racism was pretty awful, so that was another factor.)

People were coming for Alicia Vikander too during her Oscar campaign, for daring to say in an interview a year or two prior that she was doing several movies that might get her in awards conversation.

i actually was just thinking about her "it came true" moment for some reason today

that was so full-body-cringe-inducing they could show clips of it at the beginning of pilates classes to help everyone engage their core and tuck the tailbone

It wasn't that big a deal

it's okay to admit it was cringe. doesn't mean she's a bad person, just means she did something ott because she was too transparently going for a moment.

I remember finding it weird that people were hating on her cos she was campaigning hard for the Oscar.

Like there's a lot of reasons to dislike someone but working hard for acclaim wasn't one I thought would be seen as an issue.

I remember thinking at the time that people were doing the absolute most over her, and it was uncalled for. How DARE she want one of the highest accolades you can get in her field and wanted to put her face out there! While people often think of acting as something fun and frivolous they are forgetting that it was initially a trade, and just like with other jobs people appreciate acknowledgement for a job well done. I feel the same way about Bradley Cooper. So what if he was a wee bit thirsty; since when is that a crime?

I agree even though I can be a hater too lol. It’s funny cause it really depends on the actor. Some of them get passes and others are never forgiven.

It also depends on the role cause some wins or nominations you’re like “why is the being considered” or “how is this the possible winner” and then it doesn’t help that they’re campaigning hard only for in a few years everyone agree that it shouldn’t have been the winner.

But in general I do agree that campaigning is part of the job and not all films/actors have the monetary backing to do it so they extra. Ex. Melissa Leo’s consider me ads.

I don't mind people campaigning, even if it can be a little thirsty. It's only when people make bad art to try and game the system - like Bradley Cooper trying to use a poorly done b&w biopic where he is a (outwardly) straight actor playing a (maybe) queer man and adding an unnecessary prosthetic nose because unfortunately all three of those things have won awards in the past, or folks like Leo and Meryl who have actually started overacting in movies (esp. biopics) to try and get those noms - that I think there is room for real criticism. Though not the level of backlash Anne experienced, like please save that for all the creeps and criminals in Hollywood. Anne Hathaway was perfectly good in Les Mis and didn't overdo it too much, it's just a melodramatic story that works a little better on the stage is all.

I agree with you somewhat, but if the rumors are true and Bradley is bisexual he might have felt a kinship with Bernstein and 1) wanted to get his story out there, and 2) want an award opportunity. Both things can be true. I have to admit that the prosthetics were a bit much and uncalled for; I didn't like it in the Nina Simone movie and didn't like it here.
