And Lupita won for a role that is somewhat of a stereotype for what Black actors should play - a slave. JLaw and Emma got to play a diverse range of characters and time periods and genres.
I remember Alfre Woodward actually calling it out before Lupita won. She said Jennifer Lawrence and some other white actress would gone on to have a stronger career over her. And it's true.
I remember Lupita and Margot Robbie broke out the same year. I remember thinking of how much press Margot was getting and her being almost at the events as Lupita even though Lupita was the one who getting all the awards praise cause Margot didn't get a nom. This is not a strike against Margot but I thought it was interesting cause if it was the other way around, I don't think I would've seen Lupita all over the place.
Teyana Taylor could kind of be the Margot equivalent for this year, and she's barely had any press. So you're absolutely right. There's always been a marked difference in the way white women and women of color are treated in all aspects of the industry (and lbr in real life too).
i wish the europeans rallied behind sandra. but imo emma's win is largely bc of how "brave" she was. people keep talking about lily's "narrative" but emma had a narrative too.
How brave, and also how "girlboss" she was since she was a producer too. But you can't point that out to her stans, because according to them it was the performance of the century that only she could have done and it had never been done before and will never be done again 🙄
I just don’t see how Emma won over Lily outside of racism tbh. I didn’t feel any way type of way watching Poor Things or Emma’s performance. Lily on the other hand, even though I know how ends, I felt way more invested in Mollie and her survival. It didn’t feel acted, when Emma is very performative?

Good point. Though I would hope it's getting more diverse as well. Because if we're just trading the white American set of worldviews for the white European set of worldviews, we'll continue to get the same shit in a different shade. I'd actually love to see a breakdown of where international voters are from (though we can probably take a good guess). Perhaps a good indicator will be when we see the next woc win the best actress category. Is it going to happen so soon after Michelle, or will it be another 20 years? Will they even nominate two or three woc in the category at the same time? I just checked and it's always been one nominee, save for one year, and there have definitely been years where multiple woc have given nominee worthy performances imo.

i do think one can wonder if certain narratives just don't interest these voters
