I wonder if that's indicative of quality or it just doesn't vibe with other things around that release date.

I think it was a Zaslav victim, but as I posted below, Stephen King probably got pissed and got it off the tax writeoff list.

When I was a kid we were on holiday at a caravan park and the adults were all boozing it up around a fire while the kids were outside one of the vans with a portable TV watching Salem’s Lot (the original miniseries one - this was way back in the early 80s). My uncle on his way back from the toilet block thought it would be hilarious to sneak up behind us and go “RAARRRRRR!” We were all screaming and running and tripping over annexe wires and all over the bloody place. Then my auntie came and yelled at him because some of the littler ones were hysterical. Never mind that said little ones were watching Salem’s Lot in the first place. Good times.

So yeah, that’s what I think of when anyone mentions Salem’s Lot, lol.

Often when I year about this novel I'm reminded that someone gave it to my late Mother to read when she was pregnant with me.
It disturbed her so much that she opened a widow & thew it out on the lawn. My Father (also since passed) came home and was like: "Why is there a book on the lawn?" My Mom had to explain about it.

It could be that's why I don't like horror, or vampires.

Oh yeah, what a bizarre book to give a pregnant woman!

I bet Stephen King getting pissed hearing it was probably going to be written off with Coyote vs. Acme by Zaslav got it at least on streaming, because Zaslav seems to really hate streaming direct movies.

I love the 1979 TV movie version. Highly recommended to horror aficionados.
