Léa Seydoux Says Acting in Europe Is 'Easier' Because Hollywood Is 'Harsh on Women': 'You Have to Conform' in America and 'You Lose Your Freedom' https://t.co/ehnVKIswf1

“The industry in America, I find it harsh on women,” Seydoux said. “It’s hard for women to age. I don’t want to be afraid not to be desirable or ( Read more... )

She has a point about the aging aspect but also she's a nepo-baby so her ease working in Europe and even to a degree working in Hollywood is different from other european actors.

Yup.

And her experience making Blue is the Warmest Color doesn't sound pleasant so idt it's all that great over there.

If I'm being honest I tend to rme at European actors when they wanna trash-talk Hollywood in this fashion only because they looooooove turning a blind eye to the abuse and issue surrounding the European industry.

Also coming from a rich nepo-baby French woman saying she feels safer in Europe is a bit hilarious!!

ETA: she mentioning not having to conform....and you bring blue is the warmest color....is her memory off?

She's also still being cast as desirable women in Hollywood movies unlike a lot of other 40 year old actresses [i.e. her role this month in Dune Pt. 2]. I'm a big Lea fan, but she always sounds tone deaf when she makes comments like this. I'd argue she has pretty much the perfect career with both artsy Euro films and blockbusters that a lot of actors would love to have.

She's not wrong, but I think being white also gives her a leg up in the European film industry.

Honestly, for every Huppert, Binoche, or Deneuve who work consistently as they age, I'm sure there are numerous French actresses who experience the same decline as Hollywood actresses. Do Emmanuelle Beart or Sophie Marceau get much work anymore, or is the work they get completely off the radar because it's in minor French film/TV?

Curious why do they fall off? Like what is the specific reason?

Same reason they do here, contrary to what Seydoux says above: ageism.

Once again the European actors (really the actresses) are proving my point that they're so full of it!!

hm.. these comments are interesting

i think from watching what french ppl have in their cinemas i get what she means

there's so many older french actresses doing interesting weird roles, u have directors like francois ozon etc it is a very different world from hollywood, melanie laurent just directed some super femme charlies angel bond thing with her and adele a. as lovers that would never be made in the usa...

I also feel the same thing about overweight women in european/nordic TV Shows. There was an entire thing about Kate Winslet being allegedly 'fat' in Mare of Easttown and people wouldn't shut up about it for a couple of weeks. When we had a similar show in Happy Valley with an overweight female lead and no one ever cared.

The standards in Hollywood and the USA in general are higher, when it comes to weight, age, even the person's teeth has to be perfectly white and aligned.

On the other hand, France in particular is possibly the worst country when it comes to sexual harrassment and lack of accountability. So many actresses get assaulted and it's treated like it's nothing.

I mean honestly you see so many comments online, even on ONTD, joking about how ugly British people are, and I’ve always wondered if part of that is because of how many plain/even downright ugly people there are on British media with crooked teeth and the like? People complain about Hollywood standards for women, but it does seem like American audiences still expect a certain level of gloss and glamour, whereas with actresses like Sarah Lancashire most of the British public couldn’t care less about her looking like your average middle-aged women, it’s generally just her performance that gets talked about.

Poor Bella Ramsey too gets so many shitty comments about their appearance on The Last Of Us, even when they’re meant to be playing a 14 year old so who really cares what they like, but people certainly weren’t holding back on complaining about them not being cute or photogenic enough for the part

The way people talk about British celebrities is interesting. I know there's the aspect of the most privileged white men having such a low bar that they're covered in adoration no matter what they look like, but I would've thought the lesson there was to give the same opportunities to everyone else. Instead it seems to have morphed into an acceptable way of unleashing nasty feelings about anyone with an unconventional face, who ages naturally, etc. And a mentality that ugly people shouldn't be famous.
