“Now it feels like if you’ve got an internet connection, you can get access to anything.”

And yet this generation is more uninformed and ignorant than ever. Ask them about film and music icons of the past and they will have zero clue. I would have killed to have had that kind of access to content in my teens. All I had was mtv and my local library.

Because they don’t want to have to work at anything, even learning a basic plot. If it isn’t spoon fed to them, they don’t care and write it off. I work with kids and I see it all the time. It’s actually started to send me in a bit of a depression because of how much parents just don’t give a fuck anymore. And most parents I’m dealing with are in their early to mid 40s; so I’m guessing like gen xers. And they’re the same parents that want to bitch and complain their is kid is on a tablet all the time, yet they do nothing to interact with their child to get them off it. Or just not get one in the first place.

The youngest Gen X is 44 by now. Give Millennials all the credit.

I've had so many teachers on Tiktok lamenting the same thing. And then they call up the parents to tell them their kid is literally *refusing* to learn/ is disruptive/is failing and the answer always is; "Well…I'm at work sooooo…."

I love the democratization of visual media, hate that it's still so tied to commerce. I do follow some creatives on youtube and insta and tiktok (people making truly amazing short films and animation, and also just silly stuff like Ghost Files), but I see them all getting sucked into doing ads to keep the lights on. We need more public funding for the arts in general, and grants for artists where they don't need to worry about catering to advertisers.

Also Mr. Beast needs to be stopped. I can't look at his photoshopped face making some dumb expression every time I open up youtube without logging in. I know the dumb face thing gets views but my god at what cost?

It’s a fair point. She right about the accessibility cause there’s def more access to things than when I was a kid. Most of those obscure films would be gatekept.

Idk, I truly do think a lot of people don’t have the proper comprehension skills anymore to even absorb to care about what they are watching. Yeah, teenagers now only watch YouTube because all the content is literally fed to them; they don’t have to think about anything. I was just on Reddit reading a whole thread about how if you’re a teacher you notice at 4th grade is when it’s just a losing battle and you can’t even really teach, you just have to maintain order because the students are such assholes.

I know y’all want to be like “Uh we were that bad too…”, but seriously? Because when I was in school I don’t ever remember this kind of shit happening. And if you did around you, then damn people were a lot more caring where I lived.

EDIT: Oh I’m also completely blaming studios for being cheap as fuck and not wanting to buy the rights to anything new or bring in any new talent. It’s literally all nepo babies now, even behind the scenes.

True. Content now days is literally spoon fed. There's no depth to it.

She kind of lost me “gatekeepers being demoted.” If anything they’ve become consolidated and are more insistent on profit over everything and tossing aside everything else. Look at the number of shows that people actually like and watch that get canceled.
