I loved the original for such a long time, but stopped watching around the time Negan showed up. It wasn't a conscious choice, I just missed the season premiere and never caught back up.

But if you don't need all that context, I might give this one a go.

I believe all you really need to know to get caught up to watch is that Rick self-sacrificed himself by blowing up a bridge to prevent walkers from getting to the community around 8-10 years ago in-universe. He got saved/kidnapped by another much, much larger community and has been trying to get back home since.

You may not be that invested in Rick and Michonne’s relationship (compared to long time fans) at the start but from what I’ve heard from reviewers the writing (and chemistry) helps suck you into the story quickly and invest in the characters’ journeys to get back to each other.

Same! I think I just needed a break from it by that point and just never bothered going back. Though I think that’s a lie because I think Merritt Weaver and Alanna Masterson were later and I did watch some of their eps.

Alanna showed up in the prison years so a few seasons before Negan

Merritt was… the season before I think? Or right around the same time as Negan. I was rewatching it but also stopped when Negan popped up
