The only surprise Star Trek child I liked was Lal (I guess not a surprise to her dad, who intentionally created her, but a surprise to the rest of the crew). Data was the sweetest dad and that episode was heartbreaking. I heard there was some reference to her on Picard but I haven't watch it yet.

I agree though that it's usually a shortcut to try and tie all a bunch of new characters back to a more beloved character/series. Had Rey actually known her father, it would have been interesting to contrast her and Kylo's fates because they turned out so differently than their parents (not that the new Star Wars was smart enough to deal with that). But having surprise kids? That's just a lazy off-hand reference to what came before.
