LOL the way they used to build ships - and still do, in many cases - is so funny. They built ships on rollers so that when it was time for the ship to launch they could just give it a firm tug downhill towards the water and off it goes down the rollers and into the water. Most big ships - cruise, Naval, cargo - are built in drydocks now that are flooded and the ship just floats out.
