I'm not saying this in any way to justify him, he was still writing for glee (and weirdly enough, he was the writer for Michael), but at that time I'm pretty sure he was also producing AHS and The New Normal.
The last time he directed for glee was in season 2, meanwhile Ian Brennan and Brad Falchuk continued both writing and directing glee.
I'm also not saying this as a reason to excuse him, but likely, the individual writers would go to set for the episodes they wrote. My friend wrote for the show Legacies, and for her episodes, she went to set not the showrunner.
He still should have gone to set more as showrunner.
I assume the writers making Tina insufferable was also a punishment. I remember in the "The Quarterback" when she was more upset about having to wear all black again than Finn dying. That was pretty egregious.
also JFC I think Michael was the longest episode or at least the one with the biggest number of performances (9 in the episode, 10 counting the one that was cut), the fact that apparenttly no one was on the set supervising is insane.
Between this and the behind-the-scenes chaos of Supergirl, Melissa Benoist's got a best-selling potboiler on her hands if she ever wants to collect on an advance.
Ryan Murphy catching no flack after all the news that points he fostered this absolutely mess of a set culture and was lenient with Lea Michele being a racist asshole terror makes me absolutely livid. Can't wait for the time this asshole is called to responsibility about his actions (or inactions) tha made the Glee set a terror place to poc
From what I read in the Reddit post that OP linked, the cast seems to have made peace with Murphy and his actions because he “apologized” and reflected on his mistakes as showrunner. Apparently he was even a guest on Jenna and Kevin’s podcast recently. It’s their prerogative to forgive him, of course, but he barely gets any flack from the general public and that drives me crazy. After the way he handled the Dahmer situation, I’m not inclined to think he’s suddenly the emphatic and repentant man he paints himself to be.
So as part of the "general public" who has not followed this closely (I saw season 1 of Glee, and never watched any of the AM or similar series), my general understanding of how he has spoken of this is that it was his first big network hit, with lots of media attention. That he got caught up in the drama of it, and in being friends with the breakout stars. And now he realized he should have maintained a professional distance from his cast, and run the set much differently.
Since I have not heard a lot of scandal around the AH sets, it would seem like he did shape up. So my general take is that he has not continued to run his sets in a toxic fashion, and he is not a man in Hollywood constantly surrounded by rumors of inappropriate sexual behavior, which seems to put him outside the norm. But I also have no idea what you are referring to with the "Dahmer situation," so maybe his more recent scandals are just failing to hit the headlines enough.
I think Janet Mock spoke about having to deal with his and Falchuk's racism in the writing room during Pose and Angelica Ross spoke out about being on the receiving end of transphobia from Emma Roberts on the AHS set that went unaddressed. Nothing quite as bad as Glee's set, but that makes a certain sense since that show was mostly very young actors.
In general there seems to be a pattern of Ryan pulling in actors/writers from diverse backgrounds, using their talent and status to bolster the shortcomings in how own writings and his public perception as a progressive ally while either being racist to them or allowing them to be treated poorly by others on his sets.
