Anyone else feeling like the jukebox musical is to Broadway as the superhero movie is to Hollywood? An old idea occasionally used effectively but now ubiquitous to the point of annoyance and supplanting anything creative or original?
I think that in rare instances, jukebox musicals work (American Idiot, Moulin Rouge, Singin’ in the Rain, An American in Paris) but since Mamma Mia, everyone is looking for a similar success story by using existing music for the nostalgia factor because they think the songs being familiar will win over audiences. Most of the time, it’s obvious that they’re shoehorning songs in between weak plot points. I wouldn’t mind jukebox musicals as much if they were done better but they usually come off as so lazy.
But even the American Psycho musical on Broadway was sort of a jukebox musical that had one Huey Lewis song lmao. It's kind of been done! But it also had some original music by Duncan Sheik of all people.
