I just saw this tonight and loved it so much, I laughed so hard and also found parts of it very moving. she's phenomenal in it and the only time I've ever felt like she truly disappeared into a role. I wish this had been her big awards-sweeping performance and not fucking la la land lmao

i hate this question now on the red carpet

i just feel like they know they're going to be asked, they feign surprise, and then they happen to pick 4 truly classic films and it's like...... okay sure

I always feel like such a plebe, all my fave movies were made after the year 2000 lmao.

See I think people who only choose films from the 70s and before are boring (and maybe doing it to look cultured~).

i love this question because i like that it gives older films avenues to be talked about again and allows film nerds to geek out. i don't get the backlash of when people are like "ahahah you don't actually watch those films" when of course film nerds would be in the film industry. (some people online look down on actor's intelligence too much. a bunch of actors are secret nerds) however, i think it's a generational thing because older people (millennials and older) were kind of forced to watch older films because it was the only thing on compared to now where people opt for shorter forms of media or opt out completely which is a shame IMO.

i love it too. you know what i think is a tad surprising when i think about it... we actually don't know what a lot of celebs' favorite movies are or what they're into. it hasn't been that common of a question in the past, even though it is a "basic" question, so i do like that they're being asked now as a peek into their taste. even seemingly performative answers can be telling and fun to talk about, like when ti west gave his top 10 to sight and sound and he got so much shit for it, lol.

Brett Goldstein's podcast, Films to be Buried With, is fun for that. He asks questions like what they think is objectively the best film, a favorite that wasn't critically received well, a film they used to love but hasn't aged well, etc. People give some interesting answers.
