i think they can't afford more than one campaign, similar to a24

Awful, insufferable movie - but I do feel bad for Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor - she’s the best thing about it and a recent Oscar nominee. She should be at least at screenings doing q&a’s with notable celebs making rounds, not on the street outside a theater. The movie definitely is suited for bait-y campaigning.

[Spoiler (click to open)]Its an adaptation of a book but set up as a narrative discovery tale - its framing of investigations of racial injustices (then moreso suggesting deeper roots in caste systems) is conveyed at meager level, when its all supposed to be provided from an academic pulitzer prize-winning voice- and its eventual conclusion practically gives the audience a pat on the back for witnessing all of this. It all felt wrong, off, especially it being influenced by and then recreating Trayvon Martin’s death on screen. Exposition discussion about his murder would have been enough. Since its based on a book, why was this not a documentary series, where it could really discuss the certain figures the film briefly mentions to then greater detail. Structure wise, the movie also fails to examine the author Wilkerson beyond her grief- an odd choice, one that also isn’t balanced well with the travels she has for aiding her writings. There’s a moment she gets out a whiteboard as well to talk to the audience about her conclusions - an unnecessary way convey ... )

I was kind of confused that this is a dramatic film and not a documentary.

She’s dumb to do this again but it’ll get Aunjanue some attention so that’s helpful at least. Let’s see if this one goes all the way.

I’m not convinced she isn’t her character from Eureka, scamming every age

I've seen the trailer for this film at least a dozen times over the past few months (it's played before every single movie I've watched), how is it still not out?

i wonder if it would be smarter for studios to wide release films before the end of the year so that the public have a better chance seeing them and campaigning for them? a lot of people including me have been rooting for charles melton because we all watched the film on netflix weeks ago

It's probably a risk, too, because if it underperforms its award chances are diminished. But it has to hugely help if it's a success (like, would Barbie even be up for anything if it didn't make bank?)
