The United Kingdom has banned FKA Twigs' Calvin Klein ad because her “physical features presented her as a stereotypical sexual object...We therefore concluded the ad was irresponsible and likely to cause serious offense.”

Twigs responded: “The images were not vulgar and were of… pic.twitter.com/nAJJBbUMW4

I googled her ad and the kendall ad mentioned. They both seem to show a similar amount of skin? Seems like a double standard to remove one and not the other. Twigs looks fantastic in the ad, so beautiful. But in general I also don't like when women are overly sexualised in advertisements so I guess I'm a little conflicted. There's that balance between empowerment and sexualisation that's often on my mind!

Yeah, the double standard is that Twigs has a more pronounced derriere then Kendall and that made 2 whole people nervous enough to complain.

I completely agree about feeling conflicted about things like this. I don't want censorship, but I also don't want the exploitation of women's bodies either.

To me empowerment and taking back of women's sexuality should be done in a way that benefits both the individual women and women as a whole and is at the expense of patriarchal and capitalist and white supremacist systems. Women's sexualized bodies used for advertising, fast fashion, etc. just benefit men and corporations and systems of oppression, while maybe a few women get some spare change. I think FKA Twigs use of her body in her art is empowering, because she's encouraging an openness about love and intimacy for herself and others, and showing herself as both fragile and muscular in turn - something often denied to black women in particular, and all of this makes it harder to attach ads to her work.

Why was Twig's ad singled out? I think I know the answer to that, and it's pissing me off.
