I wonder if Harald will decide to abdicate next. I actually like that the older generation have decided to step back. It gives the heirs time to settle into their role with their parent there to guide them for a bit.

I hope she keeps designing and doing artsy things in her retirement. She's so talented at costume design.

I kinda thought she'd be a 'die on the throne' type of queen, but in retrospect, this makes sense. She's had some health issues iirc. And like lol maybe taking away Joachim's kids' princely titles was part of her preparing to hand off the monarchy to Frederick and centering the monarchy on his family. Plus, Frederick and Mary's oldest kid just turned 18 so he'll be able to be a more visible part of the family in the coming years.

Apparently she had a back operation earlier this year and realised it was getting harder to bounce back from that and other illnesses - she’s always been so active, she maybe decided it was better to hand over now than have a long decline. Christian is 18 now so there’s no regency issues if anything happened to Fred.

I always heard that after Edward VIII abdicated that the British Royals (and the ministers & officials supporting them) lived in fear of it happening again. They considered it abnormal & worried about the common people deciding it's too much drama and getting rid of the whole bunch.
There was even rumors of another Regency, where Charles would take over for her but only be Prince Regent, not King.
