Not shocked. They are so young and got engaged so fast.

And yeah, my parents have been married for 40 years and were very young (19 and 24) when they wed. So while it's not impossible for younger couples to stay together, I'm just not surprised when they don't.

tbh younger couples back then (this is not a judgement on your parents' marriage of course, my parents are also married for 40 years and this made me think) probably didn't have the benefit of a divorce without them being considered failures. I'm glad in this day and age, people are going "Ok, let's separate and revisit this maybe"

mte, I still think of a comic strip story Lynn Johnston published. Her mom character Elly happily chastised a younger person with "In my day, a ring meant you promised to show up (for the wedding) no matter what!" I don't remember if it was her daughter Liz or not, but the plot was "I'm having doubts about marrying this guy after he proposed." :X

This reminds me that a couple of years ago I came across an LJ community that deconstructs every For Better or For Worse comic strip. Apparently by "deconstructs" they meant "shit on every aspect of it."
