They fucked up Phoebe's character arc and Alyssa isn't my favorite person but lol at Shannen and Holly making her out to be the bad guy for wanting *checks notes* pay parity, more storylines than being the assistant witch and also a positive working environment? If you compare it to the Friends cast all being friends with each other and fighting for equal pay, you can see how different it probably was on Charmed, being treated like a stranger bitch by two 30 y.o. "best friends".
Alyssa had the main storyline in S3 and dominated S4/5 so she definitely got it lol. She also got top billing after Shannen left with Holly making less than her so it isnt as if she was fighting for equal pay.
But they all should've learned how to actually talk to one another.
lol you keep saying that Alyssa wasn’t fighting for equal pay as if that makes her on par with Shannen, who had her lawyer sending subtle threats to the studio about her contract and reminding them that no one can ever make more than her. Yeah, it would be nice for Alyssa to have fought for equal pay, but she fought for herself and her worth while Shannen was fighting to keep her below her - and not just Alyssa, but her bff Holly, too!
Yeah, if Alyssa is trying to fight for top billing herself then Shannen is going to remind them that she is the top billed.
I know Shannen can be a diva but she got people jobs and didnt get them terminated. She was there when the show was being created, help cast the show, felt entitled and wanted what she was promised.
I don't begrudge Alyssa wanting more money but she fought for herself just as Shannen did. Alyssa had no qualms about getting paid more than Holly so I dont see her as any better than Shannen.
It was a cycle of the same thing up until the show ended.
So much drama. I don't understand how they were able to fire Shannen. She was the star. Alyssa was barely even a blip around that time, esp in cultural relevance.
from what i remember, at the time alyssa eventually got the most media attention/popularity out of three even though Shannen was billed as the lead and Alyssa knew it, hence the re-negotiation. But she took it way too far by demanding Shannen be fired. that's just pure pettiness and i can't believe they fell for her bluff. as if she was going to leave the show and sue them, if they didn't give in to her demands.
I think you’re right about Alyssa getting the most media attention/popularity. I remember at the time reading somewhere that she got more fan mail than Shannen and Holly combined.
Having read this, I don’t blame Alyssa for fighting for more for herself/her character.
The show may have been sold on Shannen’s name, but Alyssa was smart enough to know her worth. She also was a big name in the 80s/early 90s and, I’m basing this off of my friends’ opinions at the time, her Charmed character seemed to be the most popular one.
Also, I can totally see Shannen and petty ass Holly creating a hostile environment, especially if they didn’t even want to talk to the mediator.
With all of that said, if Alyssa really did pull the “fire her or else” move, it was ridiculous of her.
But, this all sounds like a bunch of network people not knowing how to handle two fiery personalities and, thus, decided to pit them against each other.
It’s pretty pathetic that no one of the three women has realized that well into their older age and choose to be *waves hands* like this.
Yeah I’m curious about what happened with the mediator, if they get into their reasons for why they just refused to talk to them at all?
Honestly it does kind of sound like they were the unreasonable ones to double down and refuse to talk out any of Alyssa’s concerns, especially as Phoebe was getting a lot of story focus at that time and was considered a big draw for the show, so surely that would be the time to raise your concerns about wanting pay parity, I don’t see how that makes her the bad guy here
I think it was more the fact that: The studio brought in a mediator and tried to force it on them when Shannen/Holly (probably more Holly) believed that it could be worked out between them privately.
That makes sense I guess, but at the same time, ‘Once Shannen got word of what was happening bts, she had her lawyers remind Spelling and co. the details of her contract’ isn’t really working things out privately between the three of them either…
It does sound a lot like they just were so confident in their own positions on the show that they didn’t think there was any need to negotiate anything with Alyssa, or even listen to what she had to say, that it was just assumed that using lawyers to remind her of where she stands would be enough to put an end to it all
