I'm so excited to see The Boy and The Heron tomorrow. I only wish it was the English dub (gasp) just to hear Pattinson for a bit, but wow, a new Ghibli movie going wide and it's possibly the least accessible one lmao

Oddly we have both, but the English dub is in the evenings and the Japanese one is in the middle of the day. I already put my OOO up on Slack.

I watched The Marvels and honestly I couldn't find all the awfulness, worst script ever and other hyperbole thrown around. It was a superficial action movie, like the lot of them. With plenty of women and for once not too terrible puns every five seconds.

I saw Boy and the Heron (subbed). Does anyone want to talk about it? It was by far his least linear, and narrative drive work, and easily the most abstract. I saw big themes and enjoyed the messages they related to, but anybody going into this expected an easy to follow story is going to be disappointed.

[Spoiler (click to open)]Parakeet Mussolini lol

I also watched it subbed earlier this week and felt the same. Had to "warn" some friends about the pacing and to approach it with a more contemplative mindset, particularly for the first half since they're not really the type to look beyond plot and aesthetics tbh

[Spoiler (click to open)]I liked it upon watching (and felt very sad that this may be his last film) but have grown to appreciate it more in the days since after reading about how the characters symbolize some of the important people in his professional life like Suzuki (heron) and Takahata (grand-uncle). The ending just really stuck with me.
I loled at a tweet I saw saying that the movie is about how his son can't stack blocks for shit. Goro out there catching strays every time his dad makes any move

I'm being incredibly generous as a friend and waiting a WEEK to see Poor Things in a double feature with American Fiction next Saturday. Tomorrow I'm finally getting to Godzilla Minus One, then The Boy and the Heron on Saturday and Origin on Sunday.

I also finally got to Earth Mama this week (streaming on Showtime/Paramount+) and I really liked it, as I knew I would. <3

i'm excited to see Poor Things, especially since i had such a good time seeing The Favourite in theaters, but it's not coming to my city until next weekend!

i just vividly remember going to see The Favourite and being shocked to find a theater packed with old straight couples because that wasn't the audience i was expecting, but they were all laughing really hard and having a good time.
