They were also asked if they're "genuinely offended" if they're asked to audition for a role at this stage in their careers. Natalie Portman said she is, Julianne Moore said she isn't. Natalie Portman says at this point, you know what she can do and what she can't.

get over yourself, natalie! you're no julianne moore, so if it's fine for julianne, it's fine for you.

(ngl idk if natalie's reaction is reasonable, i just don't like her or her acting so i'm reading everything she says uncharitably.)

What they also don't realize is that auditioning isn't necessarily a reflection on them, it can be that the director lacks the imagination to picture them in a role until he sees them act the scene, read the dialog, etc. Not everything is about them, they aren't the only factor.

I've seen directors say that they auditioned a lot of actors for a role but it "never came off the page until so-and-so read it. They brought the character to life." Also directors don't see every film of an actor before they cast a role. They don't know what the actor is capable of.

I get what she is saying on auditioning but also think auditons are good ways to see who has chemistry with other actors and how they will play off each other so I'm a little meh as well.

i think she right for the basic audition piece AND that all actors should have to do chemistry tests once you've narrowed it down.

I think auditions make sense to see dynamics for characters that interact. I also think it's valid if they're asking for someone to play a role that is very different that what they've played in the past.

same, if Julianne and Kirsten Dunst - Natalie's contemporary, and someone with an equally prestigious and even longer career and much wider range of projects - are still being asked to audition, what makes her exceptional? and pls don't tell me it's the Oscar we know how that PR campaign worked and Julianne has an Oscar too.

at a certain point it really is just about status, they'd be better served by just admitting that instead of waffling about how the director should know what she can do or whatever.
