Watched May December, was actually very impressed with Natalie’s performance in a way I never have been with her… but WHAT the fuck was the music, the swelling cues every scene transition was absurd

It's mostly music interpolated from the score of a 1971 film called The Go-Between, written by Michel Legrand. Haynes talked about how he had the film's composer write original music, but how he always liked the tracks from the other film (which he'd watched recently) better, and went back and forth on it, and then had his composer basically just use takes on the older music. It is *a lot*, but I think it's hitting the melodramatic beat he wanted.

It would have been one thing if it felt at all intentional but it literally gave me like

The beginning of Austin powers I AM HAVING TROUBLE CONTROLLING THE VOLUME OF MY MUSIC

I felt the exact same. This was the first time I couldn't see her acting.

I would have done the music the complete opposite in every way because it was so heavy.

Genuinely good list of noms this year! The noms for this group are picked by a jury, so they can be a little odd some years, but this year has a good mix of stuff I'd expected to see and stuff that I'm looking forward to seeing.

Psyched to see so many noms for both May December and American Fiction, two of my faves of the year so far. Jeffrey Wright is fucking fantastic always, and Cord Jefferson's screenplay is great. I don't really understand Erika Alexander's nom, though - her role in AF didn't really stand out to me, whereas Sterling K. Brown's definitely did. Also psyched for Andrew Scott, Dominic Sessa, Greta Lee, and Ben Whishaw - folks that are probably not going to see Oscar noms, but who did some really great work.

I already know it's gonna be so tough to choose for most of these, especially since they only have two acting categories!! Ugh. And I have a lot to add to the watchlist.
