Surprised he's getting such good reviews. His acting came off so bad to me in the trailers and I've noticed how the more recent trailers have had more of Hugh Grant (a smart choice).

I'm glad at least the last two reviews feel closer to truth.

They are truly handling this manboy with kid gloves

The Daily Beast absolutely skewers the movie, saying "in form and content, a misbegotten hodgepodge that envisions Wonka’s early days through a painfully plagiaristic cinematic lens."

They go to town on Timothee, too. Including this:

"Chalamet makes exaggerated faces, his eyes go wide, and he prances about and spins his cane in a bouncy Wilder pantomime, but he constantly looks like he’s acting, and badly, rendering his turn (and the action) akin to the sort of parody one might find in a Hollywood satire or a Saturday Night Live sketch."

Ouch!

I have no interest in watching ~2hrs of an overrated twink's struggle vocals and dance.

I'm going full conspiracy and will say these reviews are bought and paid for because there's no way this is anything but a steaming pile.

I had a look at the reviews on RT, and there are definitely a few scathing reviews from the trades and at least one C+ review from Business Insider that is baffling marked as a tomato. Even some of the more positive reviews are damning with faint praise, e.g. io9's "It’s not quite a golden ticket. But maybe the bronze ticket isn’t that bad."

Plus there's a bit of review padding, by including the critical assessments of websites like Inverse and Geek Girl Riot. 🧐

The writers ultimately choose rotten or fresh if it’s on the border.

Also, it's probably beneath her, but I would love to see Manohla Dargis savage this movie.
