Barbie-core, coastal grandmother, tomato girl summer...which trend was the best of the best? Emma Chamberlain, trend connoisseur, gives her 20/20 take on the top fashion movements of 2023

I'll never understand Emma Chamberlain's fame but a lot of these trends are kind of always around they just gave them a new name. Like Stealth Wealth and Coastal Grandmother are just preppy rebranded (and mostly a cheaper version than their idols), Tomato Girl is just Clean Girl which is also just preppy and they're all just stealing Princess Di's and Sade's style lol (though if you have to steal, great choices). Wrong Shoe theory is just the classic faux dishevelment that makes it look like you're too cool to care when you really care so much. All of these can look nice though if you're not just imitating influencers and buying it from shein. I do also love Barbie-, ballet-, and cottagecore because I love that we're embracing girly things though you gotta watch out for the trad wives. I also love the newly-named Whimsigoth (just witchy/hippie/goth styles, stolen from Sabrina the teenage witch and Practical Magic

I know, I'm obsessed! I wasn't that excited about "y2k" coming back except it meant they were bringing back those late 90s early 00s mesh shirts with like moons and suns or tarot cards, and also wide leg pants. I'm glad that's what they brought back rather than that weird business casual at the club vibe.
I was expecting like overalls or straw hats or something’ like why are these kids just giving whole ass names to wearing certain colors, if ur gonna name a look it has to be a whole aesthetic
if you're over 27 saying you don't "get" a Gen Z celebrity, you've already answered your own question lol
also did they not totally misrepresent the wrong shoe theory? they just showed one pair of wacky shoes that went viral, but the actual theory is that you should intentionally wear the "wrong" type of shoe with an outfit to look more fashionable - like big chunky boots with a dainty dress or ballet flats with big jeans or w/e
I mean I totally get why marginally talented rich kids of any generation are pushed on us, she's just not particularly stylish - more of a trend follower than a trendsetter. I guess she got her name out there while things were still new, I remember her name popping up in the early days of tiktok.
I am definitely over 27 though, so maybe I'm missing something.
Also yes they definitely misrepresented the wrong shoe trend. At least we're not as old as the editors of this video lol.
Oh, and i am not sure what trend that is (maybe variation of stealth wealth??), but I like the resurgence of these very basic comfy high quality pieces, usually made in the USA.

vogue got it wrong. grandmas picking tomatoes isn't the aesthetic at all. it's basically just repackaged mediterranean glam.
