Anyone else roll their eyes at all the times they had Charles sob about Diana's death?

I had to look it up if there were accounts of that happening irl because I was like...did he really do that, though?! There were some comments that he was pretty upset when he heard the news, which was portrayed differently than how he found out in the show (alone vs. with the Queen and Philip).

Apparently he was extremely devastated, but I always understood it more as him dealing with the shock of it all and it just being this horrible end to everything… I don’t think it was taken to be redemptive for him but just an unexpected? human reaction.

I felt the need to look up if he really cared that much myself.

I didn't expect the first couple eps to be SO Diana-heavy, but I guess it makes sense because I'm guessing the rest of the season will have a big time jump forward.
I def. think there was plenty of creative freedom taken - who knows if Diana really said no to Dodi [Spoiler (click to open)] regarding an engagement

Thanks for the discussion post OP!

I was pretty underwhelmed with the first 4 episodes. They made Dodi out to be this sad sack, fumbling along trying to impress his dad, when he was a grown ass 42 year old dumping his fiancé 3 weeks before their wedding to date a princess. I also need to read up on his dad, because maybe he really was that shitty, but implying he was trying to use his son's death to social climb was awful.

All the speculation about him proposing, her saying no, but him still telling his dad they were was a bit out there for me. I know the show isn't rooted in reality but that was going a bit too far.

And the usual complaint that they're making Charles look way too good.

I saw it another thread but apparently his dad really did do all kinds of weirdo shit trying to get in with the Royal family. Among other thing, theres something about leasing one of the royal estates after a death and made the RF buy back a bunch of the items that were in the house. Generally just being a social climber and "new money", but also rumors he made that money thru nefarious arms deals. Also also accusations of sexual harrassment

My colleagues were talking about it today; I don't know how true it is but they said the British government took a lot from him but it was never enough for them to see him as "English" and he was repeatedly denied citizenship despite him contributing greatly to the British economy. I see it all the time with people of that generation who lived under British colonial rule and look up to the Brits so much and at some point in their life were made to feel like they had a chance of fitting in, but at the end of it all, never being able to.

I thought part 1 was awful. I kept rolling my eyes. This show is WAY too kind to Charles, and William which I expect to continue in part 2. Show him being a short tempered bully. Show Kate chasing him. I’m not holding my breath. The creators seem to not want to offend the living.

Which is interesting because they made him look AWFUL in s4 (good). I wonder if they got flack for that?

I don’t know, I think they went light on Charles last season too. They even added a disclaimer, as if the content isn’t in recent memory.

There's a lot of talk that the Royal Family put a lot of pressure on The Crown to temper it's portrayal of certain people.

I think it's also part of the reason it's not continuing cos dramatising current events (Harry/Meghan etc) would probably put the BRF at risk of looking bad.
