Holy shit what? It is? It’s like when I went into la la land not knowing it’s a musical cause I went with a friend and was like yeah I’m sure I’ll be good and I’m still traumatised.

It's not a musical. But the character of Lucy Gray is a singer/performer and will sing multiple songs in the film. I don't know if they're including all of them (probably not) but there's at least a few of them.

Question, since I know you’ve followed the books and have a pretty good grasp on the series from your comments in the posts: would you recommend reading this book first or going to the movie without previous knowledge? I read all three THG books years ago and I’ve been curious about this movie since the trailers started dropping.
