I went to Santorini a few years ago and I felt like the town of Oia (of the famous sunset) should probably start restricting the number of tourists per day. We went there this time of year so it was the end of the tourist season but it was quite crowded so I can only imagine it during the summer. The town is narrow, small, and on a cliff so idk. I don’t think it’s conducive to so much tourism.

I was just there and we didn’t stay in Oia, just went for a day for the sunset and it was crazy. We tried to find the spot where you can get a photo with the blue domes and there was a line, with one girl saying she waited 2 hours to get a picture. It ain’t fucking worth it girl. I took one shitty photo over the line and peaced the fuck out. It is beautiful there but insanely crowded.

It’s wild!! We ate dinner at an elevated restaurant lol so we got a good view without having to wait on the cliff. It’s crazy that people wait hours for the photo.

I know that Cinque Terre in Italy was limiting daily visitors-I really think Oia should.

Yep, I lived and worked there for over a month a few years back and the hatred I felt towards the hoards of tourists! It was just too much. Seeing the ships arrive at the harbour every day for such a small village filled me with dread.

But the locals rely on tourism. Greece relies on tourism. When covid hit, my Santorini friends suffered so much. I just don't know how it can be fixed.

Tbh my city gets so much tourism as well and it's exhausting. But also I am a hypocrite because I work in tourism.

Anyway in my last neighborhood there were daily tours going literally right past my almost street level balcony and this tour guide said 'This is where POOR people live' :|

"The town has already taken some measures to limit tourism, including limits on the number of tour buses that are allowed in per day. In May, residents even installed a large wooden fence at a particular viewing spot to stop tourists from piling up there to take selfies. But it the wall was removed following an outcry on social media, BBC reported"

Yeah I mean, these actually seem reasonable imo? I can imagine it's not the safest for people to crowd around a viewing spot like that, not sure if that's why they did it of course. Limiting the number of tour buses allowed in definitely seems reasonable. Even if people are only coming in to take a quick picture, the number seems kind of insane for the size of the town.

i feel bad for them. people don't care about designing beautiful looking towns anymore so we flock to the few we have.
