The GOP is such a mess right now; it's what they deserve. Unfortunately they will continue to be successful in elections because of gerrymandering and white people stupidity.

anyway this was slightly inevitable ever since McCarthy cut the deal with Gaetz to become Speaker back in January. The second McCarthy did something Gaetz didnt like, Gaetz was gonna pull this shit. McCarthy did this to himself!!!

Congress makes its own rules and do it at the start of every Congress. When this past House was seated in January, Matt Gaetz only agreed to support Kevin McCarthy for the Speakership IF the changed the rules so that any single congressperson to do this motion to vacate (aka any single congressperson could start the process of voting to fire McCarthy). Previous rules wouldn't have let Gaetz do this!!!
But Gaetz got McCarthy to agree to change the rules in exchange for his vote for Speaker and in very predictable fashion, it was basically McCarthy signing his own death warrant.

In reality no.
In theory literally anyone who can get a majority of votes can become Speaker.
But the GOP has a slight majority in the House so unless a few Republicans break rank and support a Dem, it's not happening.
Therefore, it is not happening.
