I feel like NYT Bestseller status isn’t really that much of a flex these days. I mean, Colleen Hoover has been there with multiple books and her stuff is 🗑️. (Don’t @ me if you love Colleen 😮‍💨😜)

I found out a while ago that fox news has like a whole warehouse where copies are stored that the company bought to ensure the authors go to number 1 on the best seller list.

Fox isn't the only people that do that. It's common practice for everyone at the this point unfortunately.

I saw so many people on TikTok (and people I know IRL) who raved about Colleen Hoover’s books. So, I downloaded Verity onto my Kindle. That’s when I learned that I can’t trust Book Tok. 🤣

Yeah, as soon as Fifty Shades of Theft hit it I realized that it actually means nothing.

I know her stuff is trashy, but why do y'all colleen haters like to judge people who just want an easy, messy read? Not everything has to the next great american novel lol. She's the trashy reality TV equivalent of books and I see nothing wrong with it.

I don’t think people have an issue with them being ”trashy” per se - I love a trashy romance every now and again, but the fact that they almost always feature super toxic relationships and uses trauma as plot and are still marketed as romance.
To be fair I’ve only read It ends with us, but nothing I’ve heard about her other books makes me think it’s that different from her other work.

I totally understand why people don't like her work, and I think all books/authors are totally open for criticism. I just see a lot of people on TikTok/Insta being downright insulting to the people who do enjoy Colleen Hoover and that's what irritates me. I was literally called stupid for liking her and I just don't think that's fair or right, you know? By all means, critique her work, her talent (or lack thereof), and how messy the relationships in her book can be, but don't put down people who do like it.

I think people on booktok needs to chill in general😅 They make liking or dissliking a book their whole personality.
Personally I just have a problem with Coleen Hoover being marketed and recommended as romance or ”easy reads”. The writing may be easy, but the subjects certainly aren’t.
But exactly the same goes for people who goes around recommending A little life as ”beautiful”

I will only speak for myself.

-the plotlines romanticize a lot of trauma and I honestly do not find that kind of thing appealing
-I hate having the character POV change every single chapter. I prefer reading first or third person narratives that stay consistent throughout.
-Again, extremely individual, but I do not like her writing style. It is disjointed and repetitive. I almost couldn’t get through the ACOTAR series for the same reason. It felt like SJM got an extra $ if she threw in the same phrases on every page.

I tend to agree with this!

I think her writing is bad and her choices are questionable. I do not like her and I'm sick of seeing her name everywhere. I've read worse books by even worse authors lol. I worry about people who find the toxic relationships romantic and ~couple goals!!~ though.

I also think people are super dramatic about recommendations that come from BookTok. If you're expecting some life changing books from there, that's on you.
