My parents separated after 34 years. Sometimes you don't have a choice when you don't have a lot of money or job opportunities (along with a host of mental health and substance abuse issues).

My parents separated after 20 years of marriage (and got back together 10 years later without ever divorcing, yet my dad was engaged while still married - LONG STORY) but it was driven by my mom's untreated mental illness followed by my mom needing psychiatric hospitalization several times for bipolar disorder. After 10 years of my mom's treatment and time spent apart, they decided after spending time together helping my dad's mother through the end of her life and then helping with my grandfather doing the same soon after that they did want to get back together, and they just celebrated their 40th anniversary this past week (after 13 years now back together).
