This is one of those things were I think more than one feeling/view can be valid. I can see where Jamie meant They as in fake friends/Judas (this is actually how I read it myself) BUT it can also read as a dog whistle and cause hurt to others. Sometimes your intention is not the stopping point, especially when such a statement would be antisemitism out of the mouths of many. Is it wrong for people who have been on the end of violent, extreme hate to read that?
Is it wrong for me to assume racism when white people say something that sounds that way to me, instead of just assuming idiocy or poor phrasing?
I think he addressed this well but I’m not the people the apology is meant for so it actually doesn’t matter what I think.
Yes, I can't be as quick as a lot of people here are to apologize him. The "they" isn't what bothers me. Why use the phrase "They killed Jesus" in the first place, when it's well known that it's an antisemitic excuse for hating Jews? I don't mind if he used "they" meaning a fake friend, but he could've chosen another analogy. Poor choice of words is an understatement.
I'm just sick of antisemitic remarks being used so casually and people brushing them off as if they don't mean anything
If Jewish people say it's anti-Semitic, it can still be anti-Semitic phrasing without anti-Semitic intent.
anti-Semitism is still accounts for a huge amount of vandalism, harassment, and violence in the USA and Europe.
It's ok to instinctively think "that sounds anti-Semitic" or to listen to Jews who suggest or assert that something is. It's also ok to evaluate for yourself based on context.
But just people screaming on Twitter? No, you don't have to pass judgment based on that.
I'm glad he adressed this so quickly and so appropriately It was clear he had no ill intention but there was too much room for interpretation by other people.
Also I'm glad OP made the post cause we all know the other poster had no interest in showing this part of the incident.
THIS! “They talked about Jesus too” is so common in Black households and it always only just means “If folks talked about someone perfect of course they’ll do it to you”. They is just they! YT ppl never fully understand our use of memes/idioms/sayings and swear they do https://t.co/6gPQ8jeOEC - KASHMIR. (@thisiskashmir) August 5, 2023
I did a double take when I realized he didn't go with "I'm sorry if you were offended" my brain wasn't ready for a man to actually put together a decent apology
The last post really bummed me out. I thought folks would see both sides but gat damn was I wrong. I checked out when folks started calling themselves slurs. This would be such a good example for a pragmatics class. So many social and cultural contexts crashing into each other.
We could also have a good wank post about the shit Tyler Perry is getting for calling Barack Obama a descendant of slavery. That's a freebie for pouritup.
Speaking of p0uritup I wonder if they're jerking off to all this cause this is mission accumplished to them.
I got pushback a while back for calling out the mods for allowing p0ur to post "touchy" subjects because their intention is always to cause drama of whatever nature (racist or rooted in misogyny), so I feel somewhat vindicated.
