Tony is obviously on the right side of history.

The differences between residuals from networks to streaming is criminal.

Does someone know how the viewing numbers changed from old tv shows to Netflix shows? In the past we all looked TV because we only had the one option to look it once. Now with Netflix you have tons of possibilities.

idk if anyone knows for sure because netflix doesn't really make their numbers public like that, none of the streamers do

TV used to have a bigger viewership overall, and syndication and the semi-transparency attached to it ensured that the residuals were properly paid. I say semi-transparency because some studios have been known to sell syndication rights to channels they own at a much lower rate than they would to screw people out of their residuals and pocket more money (see Bones and The Walking Dead among others.)

With the streamers, it's different because they refuse to disclose the viewership numbers and make it seem like a show's individual viewership is part of their whole offer. This is partly why ScarJo was fighting Disney over Black Widow, because she wanted to know many people had subscribed to Disney+ to watch the movie and its viewership proportion to calculate her residuals... and that's why they ended up settling. The moment the streamers start sharing the actual numbers, they're absolutely fucked.

That's one of the points in the strike- the streamers REFUSE to release their numbers to anyone other than their vague promotional things like "millions of minutes watched" or whatever.

I'm still trying to figure out how some of these productions are getting waivers. Like that Viola Davis G20 one, that isn't going forward with production in support of the strike, it's an Amazon Studios co-production. The other co-producer is an indie, but the movie is going to be advertised as an Amazon Original Movie and premiere on Prime Video. Maybe someone smarter can explain this to me, but how was a waiver granted in the first place?

Amazon was just the distributor from what I understand.

I don’t understand how it could be granted a waiver with an Amazon distribution deal tbh

production of the actual film and distribution/release are two separate things. amazon is handling the distribution (via streaming). viola’s company is producing the actual film
