I hated Asteroid City. I feel I’m on my own island about that movie. I appreciate short cinema tho, I would have offed myself if that movie was a second over 2 hours.

It was painful in so many ways. You’re right and you should say it!

Is it better or worse than the French Dispatch? I reaaaaaaally hated that one and am wondering if I should give Asteroid City a skip.

I dragged myself through The Isle of Dogs solely because I love dogs and I love Japan but it wasn't very good 😬

I’m a huge Wes fan like I will watch anything he puts out, I consider Grand Budapest Hotel losing best screenplay director and picture to be one of the biggest Oscar fuck ups of that decade and I was so excited for Astroid City after all of the good reviews but I just didn’t connect to it at alllll. It makes me sad lol because I wanted to love it! But really I found The French Dispatch to be so much more engaging which I know was so much more polarizing than Astroid City. But I was thinking of that little Owen Wilson on a bike tour through France and Jeffrey Wrights monologue about immigration for weeks afterwards. Whereas the only thing that really stuck with me from Astroid was the funny alien scene. All that to say I will be watching this the day it comes out lmao excited to see how Dev fits into Wes’s world!

Grand Budapest Hotel losing screenplay is still so painful because it's the tightest of the recent Anderson films and incredibly easy to engage with on an emotional level, yet there's so much to unpack every time.

Ralph Fiennes not even being nominated for Best Actor that year was ridiculous, especially bc the winner that year was soooo boring

same same

grand budapest hotel is def my favourite of his recent(ish) works. tho fantastic mr fox and the royal tenenbaums are fully up there for me

his latest films have been so much tougher to connect to but i agree with you that the french dispatch stuck with me more than asteroid city. jeffrey wright’s monologue hit me like a truck. i can tell asteroid city had ~moments written into the script but i felt a lot of nothing. which might be the point or whatever, both films share the thematic thread that life is just life and it’s sometimes just meaningless and keeps going but like wrapped up in his stylish little bow and quirky dialogue. idk just generally less enjoyable than his earlier works
