I know the movie is not supposed to be deep at all but my ontd disappointment kicked in when it goes into it's themes of patriarchy/feminism and capitalism (I just found it incredibly shallow, but it's a fucking Barbie summer movie after all), but the message was real at the end which I liked.
Really fun and cute movie, my thirst for Ryan Gosling has been renewed. He worked OUT for this film.
Yah I saw it last night and felt a bit the same? There were definitely some strong messages but the delivery just didn't hit right. Overall it was a visual delight and the cast was having so much fun so that was great!
I think there was a direct line that said patriarchy was a form of a human coping mechanism and I was like ehhh and then the throwaway comment regarding intersectionality, but again, I have to remind myself it's a Barbie movie lol.
The cast looked like they had so much fun (Ryan Gosling especially)
I don't think, even with the best writer and director and cast, etc, you can't avoid that TBH. How it's made, what it's based on, it's connection to an IP, the basis of the very movie makes it very, very hard to separate that because it'll always feel disingenuous despite the best efforts. lol.
Just got out and loved it! And even my tiny theater had some amazing merch. I got the cup with the little pool in the cup with chairs and an umbrella. And i loved who they made the villain.
