They just actually enforce their laws. She successfully pulled the “i live in the Bahamas so I don’t need to pay U.S. taxes” trick for 10 years when she lived in Miami because the IRS didn’t care enough to go after her, so she tried it again when she moved to Barcelona and discovered Spain doesn’t mess around.

The Spanish Tax Agency is pretty aggressive and will always shoot its shot in collecting what they perceive as owed (sometimes they're right, sometimes they're not), and they bank on most people paying directly what's requested instead of going through the pains of fighting it in court. They're like that with everyone alike.
