The best “surprise guest” I got was Blake Mills. I had been a fan of his for a while and all of his Austin appearances never worked out. He was touring with Fiona and then she was busted with weed so that show was postponed. Something else happened once. He didn’t really tour a lot on his own.
The pianist in Dawes had left (i think that’s what had happened?) but Blake used to kinda be in Dawes. So him coming in as a touring member… it was a fucking treat for me.

Now I’m trying to think of locals spontaneously jamming at shows.

anyway the best surprise guest I've ever had was when the last shadow puppets brought johnny marr out to play the smiths' last night i dreamt that somebody loved me, which was incredible - smiths covers are generally terrible but alex turner sang the hell out of that one omg
