He talks about how he only planned to do dry January last year but really struggled with not drinking which concerned him. He kept extending it to prove to himself he didn't have a problem (though now ( Read more... )

Glad he had the fortitude and support to stick with it.

Good for him! I had to give up drinking years ago, because I was a mean drunk. I didn’t want to be that person, I couldn’t be that person. I don’t miss it, tbh, but sometimes people look at me weird when I give that reason for not drinking, instead of being a recovering alcoholic.

I’m totally a weed addict and I wonder what kind of person I would be if I wasn’t. I keep thinking someday it will click and I won’t rely on it anymore to make me happy. I just don’t know when I’ll be ready to quit. Being ready and willing is the number one step when you want to distance yourself from a substance.

Alcohol’s not really a problem for me but it bothers me how alcohol is involved with every single friend hang outside of my one sober friend. Every single one. I know so many casual alcoholics, it’s wild.

Reminds me of guy who realized he was addicted to weed. He pretty much said the same exact thing as you.

He was like there’s a problem when I think and spend most of the day baked. He wonders how much of time he’s wasted and what he could doing instead.

I get his sentiment. I try hard not to see it as wasted time but as a way of coping, which isn’t healthy either, but no use in spending your life thinking you wasted it imo!

He mentions replacing drinking with other healthy things. One including a beer that comes with electrolytes.

Isn’t that just substituting one alcohol for another?

Also what was he previously drinking?

I'm pretty sure he meant a non-alcoholic beer, probably something like this: https://wellbeingbrewing.com/products/wellbeing-victory-wheat

In 2020, I worked in an office where a good portion of the staff did dry January. A lot of their "jokes" seemed like potentially serious problems to me. One woman really could not stop joking about not drinking an entire bottle of wine each night and I kept thinking, "this doesn't seem like the joke you're making it out to be."

Congrats to Tom to seeing his struggle and acknowledging it for what it was.

Alcoholism is so terribly normalised.

There are an enormous amount of undiagnosed functional alcoholics who will never get diagnosed because their drinking is easily explained within social norms. Wine over dinner after work doesn't sound so bad, until you realise it's a bottle every single night when a bottle is basically your entire recommended limit for a week.
