He's not wrong. It's a combination of pretty white girl, her writing her own music and playing instruments which let's be honest so many others do but Kanye's stunt definitely helped her. I'm not saying he was responsible for her fame, I just remember going to work the next day and everyone was talking about her and how bad they felt and wanted to support her. It was bizarre since they didn't even watch the VMA's let alone know who she was prior to that. It was all over the news and definitely exposed her to a new audience. Also her "special" connection to her fans is what helped her stay on top. No one else did it like her.
