He would have been too old!
Eta: surprized to see that he is only 1 year older than Affleck. Affleck was also a bit too old for the role. During filming he was about 7 years older than Nick Dunne.

Also, while i agree that Affleck nailed the d-bagginess of the character, and character's general ~Americana~ vibe, he is nowhere near as handsome as Nick. Hamm would have fitted this characteristic better.

this was my first thought but i think its because don draper read like a late 40 something when his character was actually in his early 30s when the show starts
