do people really find pronouns that confusing?! is it just a boomer thing?

on a recent ep of the town podcast they were talking about this and the host always was good about using ezra’s pronouns but the guest NEVER GOT IT CORRECT ONCE.

ezra is TRASH but misgendering anyone just grinds my gears.

it's very revealing imo. it shows how some people view pronouns not as a basic right afforded independently of other things, but a privilege that will be revoked if the person in question isn't good enough to earn it.

idgaf about ezra miller, they deserve the fucking worst, but what kind of message does this send to the trans and NB ppl who witness this behaviour? that they're only your disapproval away from being dehumanised. (i mean, that's how life sadly treats trans/nb folks on the whole, but i hope ykwim.) using correct pronouns isn't a treat that you earn for being a good person. nobody would be misgendering me, a cis woman, if i did evil things, it just curiously happens to nb/trans folks. hmmmmmm i wonder why!

Judging from some conversations I've had on twitter recently, A LOT of people literally do not know even what they are.

Portuguese is a very binary language so they're not just confusing but some of the options sound downright ridiculous. With English, I find it much easier since you don't have to make a shitload of words neutral in order for it to work, nor use made up pronouns that aren't even widely known. I really wish we had an option like they/them in my language bc I find it pretty easy to follow.

yeah, i have the same issues. with english it is incredibly easy to words things correctly no matter what pronouns, plus the use of they is already very intrisic within the language itself, only boomers can't use it because they hate the concept.

but when it comes to portiguese it is so difficult because it really feels like it goes against the language itself. like you said it's a very binary language and we don't have a neutral pronoun (or words for that matter). but i do try my best to keep myself on my toes and not be an accidental asshole. i also wish we had something like they/them!

I often go with "person" so I end up using she/her pronouns since person is a female noun, but stuff like ile/dile/elu/delu sounds so ridiculous to me. I'll absolutely use them if that's how the person I'm talking to prefers but ngl, the whole time my mind is like 'this shit is NOT doable'.

Yeah, I'm starting to learn French and I'm basically just misgendering myself constantly because I don't have another option. I know people are using iel (combo of il and elle, pronounced yell), but that doesn't totally solve the problem for the same reason you explained.

yeah, and it's kind of annoying when English speakers act like it's super hard to use they/them bc romance languages completely fucked us over in the neutrality aspect lol

Absolutely! It's so easy in English. We already do it when the gender is unknown (someone left their book here! I hope they come back for it!) without any issues. But other languages, especially romance languages, you'd need to overhaul the entire language... which isn't happening lol

same just said this to someone else, is easier in english than in romance language where shits so binary.

this is so interesting to me for some reason! just how language translates, like words literally hold their power. idk im high oop

im currently learning spanish and its actually hard to remember the masculine/feminine pronunciation and which articles go to what word. in my brain i just want to say a word one certain way, not have different variations of one word if that makes sense lol. it gets confusing! i want to learn portuguese next tho, my ava would be proud <3

In german we are still trying to establish female versions of words, let alone the „they“ one. I don’t think we even have a word for this? Like „Teacher“ in German would be considered a „male“ word, just like „doctor“ so now we are supposed to say „teacher:in“ or „doctor:in“ to make it more female inclusive.

It’s HARD sometimes

really? I thought German was like English in that sense, where you could just use the noun with a pronoun to specify gender but the noun would be the same. Shows how little I know of German lol Gorgeous language tho <3
