It's a shame, but I can see this. His visions tend to be...unusual, and studios are only interested in bankrolling remakes and sequels. The only studio that seems like they would take something in his wheelhouse is A24.

A24 and the like seem like the right choice but I wonder if the budget is in issue cause most of their films seem to be under 10M. Ari Aster's Beau is Afraid had a 30M budget but this is his 3rd time with A24 and his films had done well so he managed to earn a higher budget.

Netflix should have given him a 3 or 4 picture deal after Pinocchio swept every award shows animated category. Their stuff coming out of Annecy is interesting enough.

This is such a depressing picture of the industry. Like, if someone with 3 Academy Awards, 3 BAFTAs, 2 Golden Globes, etc etc, can get something that isn't a sequel or an MCU movie made, then what hope is there for any original storytelling in the future?

(Also, a lot of what he lists in the tweets above isn't even original storytelling -- there are a lot of adaptations there, but I guess ones that had slightly too unique or interesting a point of view)

Being completely honest, I'd love to see his rendition of the little mermaid, allerleirauh, beauty and the beast, and devil in the green jacket.
