I believe her. She's always come across as a badass.

If her mom was able to protect herself and Charlize from her alcoholic and abusive father who was attacking her mother one night and firing a gun at both of them, and her mother shot him as self-defense (she faced no charges, thankfully), I can see her willing to do anything to protect her kid, too.

I like her so much. I fucking love other strong women who are angry for a cause. It's my favorite kind of person. That badass, outspoken, don't fuck with anyone but bigots energy is one that I gravitate towards but I actually rarely find.
