JLo's character is a lesbian, her girlfriend finds her with Ben's character and accuses her of being bisexual? straight? and then tries to kill herself. Immediately afterwards JLo and Ben fuck, and in the end JLo and Ben drive off together with it heavily implied that they begin a relationship.
If they'd simply made JLo straight it would have been extremely forgettable, but the choice to make her explicitly a lesbian and using that for drama, making her ex out to be a psycho, and then having her hook up with a man at the end is what makes it trash.
Yeah, Ben's character is hugely misogynistic and homophobic towards her - he calls her a dyke-asaurus at one point and suggests that lesbians really miss dick. None of that even touches the treatment of their ambiguously developmentally disabled hostage. I think there was also a SA scene. Beyond that it's just badly written, badly paced, characters disappear with no resolution; it's just an offensive film on every level.

I'm still shocked that happened, and so recently too

Some of these were also wildly successful. It's all about what will sell, not about artistic aesthetics. Cash baby cashhhh.

Like I am not going to pretend it was good, it wasn't, but I have seen worse films (From Justin To Kelly for example).
