So this show I'd never heard of until this February has been cancelled. Appaz they cannot come to an agreement with Kevin Costner

I really liked the prequel series, but oddly enough, I never got around to finishing Yellowstone. Guess I gotta now.

So does this sort of thing happen because studios get tired of paying the actors their season 3+ rates and want to pay a mostly new cast way less for what is essentially the same show? Because other than screwing over the existing team, what is the point of cancelling a show just to debut it's sequel a month later?

I think Kevin Costner was the main character and he walked. So maybe the spin-off is the a time jump with everyone else?

Usually yes, when it's time for negotiating cast salaries again what usually happens is that cost of the cast salary + cost of episodes + how much they make off the show and all that other stuff is taken into account and that's how they decide if something is renewed. Sometimes studios feel like a show is still too expensive even when it's popular so it gets canned.

But I think part of it in this case is because Kevin Costner was (supposedly) being extremely difficult and only wanting to film a certain amount of time. Normally I take "actor is difficult to work with" stuff with a grain of salt but apparently Costner has a habit of being difficult and has pulled stuff like that before, so. Yellowstone has already proved it can support spinoffs so they probably decided to just wash their hands of the whole problem and do a new show.
